Hydraulic Accumulator Safety: Handling, Discharging & Servicing

Hydraulic accumulators store significant energy under high-pressure nitrogen, which makes them genuinely hazardous if handled incorrectly. Before any service, an accumulator must have its hydraulic pressure fully relieved and, where required, its nitrogen charge safely released — and that work should be done by qualified technicians. Because accumulators are pressure vessels, safe handling, testing and certification matter.

Why accumulators are hazardous

An accumulator holds energy the way a loaded spring does: a charged unit can release fluid or gas suddenly and with great force if it’s opened, damaged, or disassembled incorrectly. The nitrogen charge is under high pressure, and the stored hydraulic energy doesn’t disappear when the machine is shut off — which is why an accumulator is treated as a pressure vessel.

Discharging an accumulator safely

To make an accumulator safe, the hydraulic system pressure must be relieved first, then the gas charge released following the manufacturer’s procedure where the unit requires it. Never disassemble a charged accumulator, and never assume a unit is discharged. Because the exact procedure varies by type and manufacturer, this is best done by a trained technician with the right tools.

Handling, storage and transport

Handle accumulators as pressure vessels: protect the shell and gas valve from damage, don’t expose units to heat or flame, and store and transport them per the manufacturer’s guidance. A damaged shell or valve on a charged unit is a safety risk.

Leave charging, servicing and disassembly to qualified technicians

Given the stored energy involved, purging, discharging, charging, disassembly and pressure diagnostics should be done by qualified technicians.
