Which Hydraulic Oil Do I Need?
Start with the equipment — then the environment.
The correct hydraulic oil depends on the pump or machine manufacturer’s specification, the operating temperature, duty cycle and application. These are useful starting points, not substitutes for the equipment manual.

Before mixing or changing oil: verify the equipment manufacturer’s fluid specification. Different viscosities and fluid chemistries are not automatically interchangeable, and some manufacturers specifically warn against mixing hydraulic oils.
Why the Correct Hydraulic Oil Matters
The wrong fluid can make good hydraulic equipment behave badly.
Oil affects power transmission, lubrication, cooling and component life.
If hydraulic oil is too thick for the operating conditions, the pump may become sluggish or struggle to draw fluid. If it is too thin, internal leakage and wear can increase. Contamination, water and degraded oil can also contribute to corrosion, foaming and poor system performance.

Can I mix different hydraulic oils?

Can the wrong hydraulic oil damage a pump?
Yes. Incorrect viscosity or fluid chemistry can contribute to poor lubrication, cavitation, heat, internal leakage, sludge, corrosion and shortened component life. Use the oil specified for the equipment and operating conditions.
How do I know if hydraulic oil should be changed?
Cloudy, milky, unusually dark or contaminated oil can indicate water, degradation or contamination. If the equipment is behaving differently or the fluid condition is questionable, check the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions or have the system inspected.
